1969年3月に発表された曲で、同年4月から6週連続1位、年間第2位で、1970年には、グラミー賞最優秀レコード賞、最優秀ポップパフォーマンス賞を受賞しました。大ヒット曲ですね。ロックミュージカル「ヘアー」のオープニングナンバーとクロージングナンバーをくっつけたものだそうです(Wikipedia参照)。私は、流石にリアルタイムでは聞いていなくて、3.4年遅れて聞きました。1970年代前半はようやく洋楽が広くかかるようになった頃で、当時の洋楽ファンにとってはビートルズが出た1960年頃からの音楽は知っておくべき常識だったので、ラジオでは3,4年くらい前のヒット曲は当たり前のように頻繁にかかっていたのです。
50年前の歌で、それなりの古さはありますが、でもこういう曲調のヒット曲ってなかったです。ロックオペラから取ったってのもあるんでしょうが、厳かに始まって、ドラマチックに盛り上がるというメリハリにとんだ曲です。管楽器、弦楽器もふんだんに使われていてなかなかに豪華です。名曲です。最近はこういうアレンジの曲はまれなので、余計そう思います。「This is the dawn of the age of Aquarius」のところで入るコーラスのハーモニーがなんとも魅力的です。人の声が作る和音がとてつもなく好きなんですよ。The 5th Dimensionって、「五次元」て意味ですが、これって五人のメンバーが作るハーモニーの見事さから取ってるんですよね。どこにもそうとは書いていないんですが、勝手にそう思ってます。
曲の冒頭に出てくる「第七ハウス」は占星術の用語だそうです。ここで説明すると長くなるので、「占星術 第七ハウス」でググってください。
