日本人には意味の取りにくい比喩が満載の歌詞ですが、「あなたを自由にするために私はあなたとともにいよう」ということが山と湖がある牧歌的な風景の中で繰り広げられる、という曲であります。
歌詞がもたらすニュアンスと曲調は非常にマッチしているのですが、歌詞の前後の脈絡が余り感じられなくて、「おまえら、先に曲作って、合いそうな言葉を後から適当にはめ込んだだけだろ」と突っ込みたくなる内容でもあります。(2011年 7月 2日)
訳し直しました。昔辞書をひいたとき、「Roundabout : 回り道のこと」なんて書いてあって、「なんじゃろ」と思っていたのですが、環状交差点(円形の道路に道がつながっていて、信号なしに他の道に行くための仕組み)のことでした。日本にはほとんどないので、環状交差点と訳しても多くの人が分からないかもしれません。ドラえもんのどこでもドアみたいなイメージと解釈してそう訳しました。
「Wikipedia(英語版)」に、曲の制作に関する情報が結構ありました。サードアルバム「The Yes Album」のプロモーションツアー中にスコットランドに行ったときに環状交差点のあまりの多さに曲のテーマにしようと思ったようです。スコットランドを車で回っているとき、結構雲が低く立ちこめていて、山が雲から生えているように見えたのが「In and around the lake, mountains come out of the sky and they stand there」という歌詞になったとか、スコットランドからロンドンまでは車で24時間で戻ったようでそれが「twenty four before my love, you'll see, I'll be there with you」という歌詞になったとか、「Different atmosphare」で語る異国はスコットランドをイメージしているとか、そんなような感じで、結構、見たこと、起こったことをそのまま題材にしたようです。曲のテーマは、冒頭に書いたとおりだと思いますが。(2018年 5月26日)
