英語版のWikipediaによく分かるこの曲の解説があります。曲のテーマは、トルストイの「戦争と平和」をベースにしたそうです。有名な小説ですが、読んだことのない人も多いと思う(実は私も読んでません)ので、あらすじはこちら(NHKの100分で名著のサイトです)を参照してください。
恵まれて、野心もある有望な若者が、自分の国のために立ち上がり、抑圧する者に戦いを挑む。これが8分頃までのボーカルパートです。最初は明るく始まりますが、だんだん緊張感を帯びた曲調になっていくのは、戦いが現実味を帯びていく事を示しています。8分過ぎから16分過ぎまで8分ほどの長いインストルメンタルパートがありますが、これが戦闘の一部始終を表現しています。8分のインストルメンタルパートって、なかなかスゴイですよね。スティーブハウとパトリックモラーツは、意外と相性よかったんじゃないかな。この後、Soon,,,で始まるバラードになりますが、これは、戦争を終えて、得たものも失ったものも全てひっくるめて受け入れ、悟り、平和と得られた幸せをかみしめる内容です。このアルバムが出た頃は、バラードで曲が終わるところが好きではなかったのですが、歌詞を理解してみるとこうなる理由が分かりますね。
